  Sixth TWINLATIN meeting
The meeting was organized in Porto Alegre-Brazil from 01st to 05th October 2007. Cuareim-Quarai is a transboundary basin between Brazil and Uruguay where the rice production is the main productive activity. Technical meeting and project progresses were commented and analysed during the first two days. A field trip was done during the rest of the week. The basin was visited and representatives from both partners IPH and DNH were part of this trip. A meeting with local people and local organisations from both countries took place in Artigas (Uruguay) during the trip, giving the entire consortium a broad view of the problems and status of the river basin from a stakeholder perspective. The progresses and achievements in this basin are important making that both Local Coordination Committees and the local organisations work in a coordinated way. Activities with schools (fishing day) and visits to other stakeholders took place. The meeting and field trip were organised and coordinated by IPH (Brazil) and DNH (Uruguay).
  TWINBASIN training program
During the first year of Twinlatin, technical efforts focused on defining prioritised needs from each of the basins, the stakeholder involvement, the data availability, and the construction of a harmonised database. The main training needs were identified and some twinning activities took place. These actions have gone smoothly and all the partners have learned from this twinning process. However, the current funding is limited compared to the gaps in knowledge identified. The partners decided to look for additional sources of financing a more concrete training program where the central issues were: Database construction and Modelling applications. IVL (Sweden), UNIGECC (Peru/Ecuador), CIEMA (Nicaragua) and DNH (Uruguay) agreed in that the knowledge, expertise and experience that IVL has in-house can help them to establish a more sustainable IWRM in the respective Latin American basins. It was decided to organise a training activity with database construction and modelling applications as the main content focus. This activity was designed considering two main modules: Module 1: Training course at IVL – Stockholm Module2: Follow up activity. IVL experts visiting Uruguay and Peru/Ecuador partners providing on-job training The training at IVL (tree weeks in May 2007), was attended by participants from three different TWINLATIN basins: two from the Catamayo-Chira basin in Peru/Ecuador, one from the Lake Cocibolca basin in Nicaragua and two from Cuareim-Quarai in Uruguay. The training consisted of two parts (see attached training schedule). The first two weeks were devoted to activities that were common for all participants: lectures in hydrology, hands-on training with hydrological models and the ArcHydro database structure. The last week of the training consisted of supervised work with data from respective basin that the participants were asked to bring to the training. The objectives of the hydrological modelling and the progress of the planned activities in the three basins differed a lot. The module 2 was carried out during October 2007. Mr. Tony Persson travelled to DNH in Montevideo-Uruguay and Mr. Peter Wallenberg visited Piura-Peru and supported the activities already started in the Module 1.
  Third TWINLATIN meeting
Third TWINLATIN meeting. The meeting was organized in Piura-Peru from 16th to 20th October 2006. The first three days considered a field visit to the Catamayo-Chira basin. Starting from Loja (Ecuador) and ending at Piura (Peru). The field trip gave a good view of the characteristics of the river basin in terms of landscape, soil type, land use, different conflicts and perceptions, etc. This will benefit further discussions on transfer of modelling capacity, stakeholder involvement, economic analyses etc. Representatives from both countries (transboundary river basin) were part of this trip giving useful comments and opinions about the TWINLATIN activities. Meetings with local people and local organisations from both countries took place during the trip, giving the entire consortium a broad view of the problems and status of the river basin from a stakeholder perspective. A number of interviews and radio/TV conferences were carried out.
  TWINBASIN project proposal
TWINBASIN project proposal. The main objective of TwinBasin is to support effective use of research and development in the field of IWRM by promoting twinning of Basin Organisattons. This will be achieved by creating a world-wide forum dedicated to identifying and sharing knowledge and best practices, as well as staff exchanges for in-depth know-how transfer. A staff exchange proposal was formulated together between IVL-CIEMA-UNIGECC-DNH focusing in database construction and Modelling applications. The financial support decision is expected on February 2007.
  The 7th Framework Programme
The 7th Framework Programme. The first Call of Proposals of the Seventh Research and Technological Framework Programme FP7 was launch on 22nd December. FP7 is the EU's main instrument for funding research in Europe and it will run from 2007-2013. FP7 is also designed to respond to Europe's employment needs, competitiveness and quality of life. The broad objectives of FP7 have been grouped into four categories: Cooperation, Ideas, People and Capacities. For each type of objective, there is a specific programme corresponding to the main areas of EU research policy. All specific programmes work together to promote and encourage the creation of European poles of (scientific) excellence. (http://cordis.europa.eu/en/home.html)
